Neurosurgery
The Neurosurgery department was the first Superspeciality department started in 1982 after Dr. V. N. Jindal joined the department. Since then it has grown to be a vibrant department managing a wide spectrum of problems involving the brain and spine. It became a separate department 10 years later after Dr. V. N. Jindal became Professor and Head of the department. The present head of the department Dr. Ponraj K. Sundaram joined the department in 1994 as Lecturer in the post vacated by Dr. P. K. Gupta who worked for a brief period.
The department gained recognition for imparting training in Neurosurgery a superspeciality subject for the award of M.Ch. degree in Neurosurgery, in 2008. Since then more than 20 candidates have obtained M.Ch. degree in Neurosurgery after qualifying for the same. Presently it is well-staffed with qualified and well-trained Consultants. Dr. Farook Sayed and Dr. George Xavier Kuchery worked for a brief period as Assistant Professor before leaving for other opportunities.
The Department now handles traumatic brain injuries, brain and spine tumors, conditions involving the cranio-vertebral junction, degenerative compressive disorders of the spine, hydrocephalus, cerebral hemorrhage requiring surgery, vascular diseases and Pediatric neurosurgical conditions. It is well equipped for micro neurosurgery, spine surgery, neuronavigation-guided surgery and stereotactic surgery.
