The Escola Medici Cirugica da Goa was founded in 1842 and was named as Goa medical college, post-liberation in 1961. The Ribandar Hospital was established on 13th December 1967.

In the beginning, this section was built as an extension of the existing Escola Medica Complex in Panjim. And, like most Portuguese houses in Goa, it was only on the ground floor. Later, the 1st floor was added. The department of OBG was functional in both hospitals, until September 1976, when it was shifted to Ribandar in order to allow for optimal maternal and neonatal care.

Subsequently, in 1992 the department was shifted to Panaji, Old GMC Complex. Anticipating the need for a much bigger hospital, Project Goa Medical College at Bambolim was started. The department of OBG was shifted to Bambolim in the year 2001 allowing multidisciplinary facilities like NICU/ICU/blood bank, and interdepartmental referrals, all in one place, the department of OBG flourished through the ages resulting in a significant reduction in the maternal/ fetal mortality rates.
