Transfusion Medicines

Blood transfusion services were started in 1952 and were subsequently formalised by the Portuguese government in 1955. The Blood Bank was setup under the name” Centro de Hematologia, Hematoterapia e Reanimacaou” and functioned as an annexe of the “Escola Medica de Goa” the forerunner of the Goa Medical College.

After the liberation of Goa in 1961, The Blood Bank was shifted to a new building in The Goa Medical College campus in Panjim in 1969 and a small satellite Blood Bank was operational in Ribander until 1992 to cater to the needs of the obstetrics department located there. It was later shifted in 1993 to the present Goa Medical College Bambolim, where it is functioning till date. A new Blood Bank building is proposed near Super Speciality Block, Bambolim.
